Yoga for Pain and Stress Relief
I began taking yoga initially at HeartSong because my naturopathic physician recommended it. I was suffering from chronic neck and shoulder pain from a variety of causes, and my physician thought that the style of yoga taught at HeartSong would benefit me. I had been taking Bikram's yoga classes for about three years, and I had started taking Kundalini yoga classes at work shortly before switching to HeartSong.
I have been amazed and delighted at the quality of instruction and the personal attention at HeartSong, and it has helped me tremendously. I went from being barely able to put weight on my shoulder without pain to performing handstands over the period of a year. I now take three classes a week, and I actually look forward to taking yoga at the end of a workday; it eliminates the stress built up during the day and I always feel energized afterwards.
I have also experienced some unexpected benefits at HeartSong: learning more about body mechanics and proper body alignment, learning more about yoga in general, and learning the Sanskrit names for the poses. In addition, there is a spiritual aspect to the yoga practice that I appreciate. It brings about a sense of well-being that helps cope with everyday stresses. And it is fun!
