What Class Should I Take?

Classes at HeartSong are offered according to levels based on the experience and fitness level of the student. Every class is designed to be accessable and safe. If you would like some help deciding which class is right for you, please contact us.

Most of our students who have limited or no experience with yoga do best starting with Level 1 or a beginning class. If you are new to regular exercise or have concerns regarding your fitness level, a Gentle Yoga class may be a better starting point for you. New students with injuries or other physical issues may need to begin in Adaptive Yoga or even with a Private Yoga Lesson.

If you are very physically fit, we still recommend that you start with a Level 1 class just to see how our instructors approach yoga. You may find however, that you move fairly quickly into a Level 1-2 which moves at a little faster pace and is more physically challenging.

Level 2 is an intermediate class designed for students who have at least 6 months of yoga experience and are familiar with the basic postures and are ready to work on more challenging postures. It is best if you are familiar with the names of foundational poses and know the basic form as instructors will be focusing more on refinements and subtleties when instructing these postures.

What to expect in class:

During a yoga class at HeartSong Yoga you can expect a mix of verbal instruction, demonstration, hands-on assistance and occasional partner work to help you learn the basics as well as refine your understanding and performance of the yoga postures. This helps you to get the full benefits of yoga practice.

HeartSong Yoga instructors are readily available during class to assist each individual as the entire class progresses together. They will offer individualized suggestions and instructions as well as hands-on assistance. You are always free to decline any assistance - just let your teacher know if you would prefer not to be touched.

How to Attend Class:

The classes on our weekly yoga class schedule are all offered on an ongoing basis which means that you can start classes anytime and progress to other levels as you become more confident in your practice. We find this works best so you don't have to try to arrange your schedule around ours. Don't worry if you are new; there are always new people coming in to class and we'll make sure you feel comfortable.

When you first come to class, you will be asked to fill out a New Student Profile, you can print a pdf version of it here and bring the completed form with you. Please make sure to arrive 10 - 15 minutes before class is scheduled to begin so you can meet your teacher and get set up for class. Learn more about registering for a class...

Preparing for Class:

Please plan to arrive for class 10 - 15 minutes early for your first class in order to be set up and meet the instructor prior to the scheduled beginning of class. If you are late please enter quietly and wait in the back of the room until invited by the instructor to set up. This allows the other students to listen to the opening comments of the instructor and participate in the beginning meditation without being disturbed by late arrivals.

Please wear close fitting, comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely (no sweats please). This enables your yoga teacher to see the alignment of your body and provide individual instruction for your learning benefit and safety. Yoga is done in bare feet.

Please do not wear perfumes or strong essential oils; remove watches and heavy jewelry before class.

Come with an empty or nearly empty stomach. You may eat a light snack an hour before class; limit larger meals to 2 – 3 hours before class.

Out of respect for your teacher, your fellow students and yourself, please give yourself plenty of time to arrive and be settled in before class is scheduled to begin.

You are welcome to bring your own yoga mat if you have one, however we do provide regularly cleaned yoga mats and props for our students if needed. We also sell mats and props at the studio and many students do find it preferable to have their own mat for comfort and at home practice.
