March News and Reasons To Breathe Through Your Nose

Breathe In The Spring

Spring is right around the corner and it is a great time to think about all the great things we can do to support our bodies and hearts for growth!

The breath is a great avenue to health and well being and with all the wonderful spring blossoms right now, there is plenty of reward for taking a deep breath!

Here is a whole list for you on why you should breathe through your nose:

Reasons To Nose Breathe

  1. Warms the incoming air to 95 degrees Fahrenheit, which is the optimal temperature for the lungs.
  2. Nose breathing moisturizes the incoming air. The average person takes 20,000 breaths per day; by breathing through the nose, you add one liter of water to your internal environment.
  3. The hairs and membranes of the nose filter the air during inhalation.
  4. The movement of air through the nose keeps the environment around the inner auditory tube free from stagnating debris. . . . . . .

HeartSong Yoga Teachers Study

One of our commitments at HeartSong is for all of our teachers to continue their studies so that we both nourish our own yoga practice and stay fresh and inspiring in our teaching for you.

Lani and Leslie both recently attended trainings and will be bringing much of what they learned to class to share with you.

Leslie just returned from a 6 day retreat with Angela Farmer and Victor VanKooten, two teachers she has wanted to study with for years. It was a a fantastic retreat (held on the coast of Mexico for extra appeal!) and she found the teaching incredibly inspiring. Angela and Victor have a wonderful way of supporting students to deeply listen to their inner voice and to bring greater authenticity to the practice of yoga. This is always an intention in Leslie's classes as well and to study with teachers so skilled in guiding one there was a real gift.

Lani discusses the 2 trainings she attended:

One was in southern California in a process called Continuum founded by Emilie Conrad.  Emilie says "movement is not what we do, it is what we are."  We are born into a linear world and the work of Continuum is to put us physically back in touch with the fluid resonance of the world we were conceived in.  We worked with breath and sound to access our deeper awareness of movement which connects us to all the available information the universe has to offer us on all levels of perception.  I find this work enhances my ability to speak more sensitively to the inner workings of yoga.

The second training was held in
Seattle with Robert Litman on breathing..  In this weekend workshop we learned about the anatomy of breathing, and the benefits of breathing in particular through the nose.  We also learned how breathing affects different systems throughout the body.   I am always looking to expand my knowledge of the different systems of the body and how to work more sensitively with them and these two workshops offered me that opportunity.
